Biography

Dr. Shafer serves as Executive Director of Campus and Community Enrichment within the Office of the President after leading campus and community enrichment when it was part of the Texas A&M University Division of Academic and Strategic Collaborations.

In his role, he oversees key cultural programs, including OPAS, the Art Galleries, Sustainability and Campus Enrichment, and the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.

He has been a professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences at Texas A&M University since 1996 and maintains an affiliation with that department.

Before joining the faculty at Texas A&M he was a Lecturer and Research Fellow at James Cook University in Townsville Australia.

He received his B.S. at Texas A&M University, M.S. at the University of Utah and Ph.D. at Clemson University. He has worked with colleagues and students to understand relationships between facilities, design and leisure experience; park planning processes; and recreation specialization.

His publications appear in Landscape and Urban Planning, Landscape Research, Urban Design, Environmental Planning, Coastal Planning, Leisure Sciences, Journal of Recreation and Park Administration and Journal of Leisure Research.

Over the past 20 years his planning and design students have participated in numerous projects to support agency, community and neighborhood initiatives related to park, recreation and tourism resources.

Shafer has been recognized for his teaching and service by the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, Vice Chancellor, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Texas Recreation and Parks Society, Association of Former Students, American Planning Association and City of College Station.
